Great Ideas Course

In 1980 Dr. Iliff and six other men started Cair Paravel School (www.cpls.org), a K-12 classical Christian school in Topeka, Kansas. It was his conviction, following such philosophers as Dorothy Sayers, Mortimer Adler, Jacques Barzun, and John Henry Cardinal Newman, that universities had abandoned the attempt to teach generally and humanistically. The average enrollment is around 300 students, and regularly produces National Merit finalists and commended scholars.

He designed the Great Ideas course for juniors and seniors at Cair Paravel to give them the analytical skills and background to engage in “the great conversation” the rest of their lives.

At Cair Paravel this is a four-semester course. One of the texts edited by Dr. Iliff, Political Philsophy, consists of 36 readings covering two semesters. It is available to order from:

National Electronic Type

The link below will give you an idea of whether this course would be appropriate for your school. Dr. Iliff and his wife, Dorothy, who jointly taught the course for six years, would consider teaching a free weekend seminar for educators if there is sufficient interest.
