Forget Weight Loss Forever (1 Feb 05)

Charles Platkin wrote another superb article in the C-J Monday, January 31st. He points out that research clearly proves the futility of diets. Successful "dieters" aren't thinking about dieting at all. Good choices have become second nature. He explains the concept of "automaticity"-- we do hundreds of things every day without a second thought. Until eating good food in proper amounts, and getting daily exercise, has become automatic, you're likely to fail. It's just too much work. So how do you get to that point? It takes hundreds of repetitions for a choice to become automatic. Think how many times it took your mother nagging you to brush your teeth. Well, your mother's not living with you any more, so you're going to have to arrange your environment and steel your will until habit kicks it. After a while, it won't be so painful.
